The circuit was built in 1969. The name was Österreichring at the time. The Austrian Grand Prix was held up to and including 1987. In 1995 the circuit was renovated and the name changed to A1 Ring. It was closed in 2003 and partially demolished. The partial owner of Red Bull bought the circuit in 2005. After investors withdrew, it was uncertain whether the circuit could survive. 3 years later, the renovation could suddenly continue in a slimmed-down form. It reopened in 2011 and was renamed the Red Bull Ring.
